Talking Swiss Replica Rolex Watches With Matt Jacobson

Matt is the type of guy who doesn’t need to live in Silicon Valley with the rest of his world, or in Beverly Hills with the other men of means – he’d prefer to live in a Swiss Replica Rolex Watches designed home on the water in Manhattan Beach – the type of home you might, and actually did, see in Dwell Magazine. To put it simply, Matt Jacobson’s life isn’t about excess – it’s an expertly calculated equation that suits him and him alone just perfectly. His watch collection follows suit. This is Talking Watches with Matt Jacobson.

You don’t meet people like Matt Jacobson often – but when you do, you remember them. You remember Matt not because he’s a Silicon Valley celebrity like a Kevin Rose or his longtime friend and colleague Mark Zuckerberg, but because of the way he lives his life with purity and passion. Matt Jacobson was the eighth employee of Facebook, ever. He is a serial entrepreneur, with an impressive record to his name even before Zuckerberg asked him to come on and help lead Facebook as head of Market Development, a title which encompasses all forms of business development, including the role of overseeing acquisitions like Instagram.

But what Matt Jacobson does so well is he figures out, over time, through hours of research and study, what it is that suits him, and his lifestyle, and he buys only those objects that he appreciates the most. Matt isn’t about owning all the Paul Newmans, he wants to own the reference that Paul Newman actually wore. Matt doesn’t want to own every vintage car, he wants to focus on those from original owners that are capable of taking his wife, children, and dog around town with ease (you should see his Mercedes 6.3 with 23k original miles). Matt is the guy who was shooting vintage Leicas decades ago, and is stopped on the streets of Tokyo to be asked about his gear.

Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona Reference 6239

The 6239 is where the Daytona all started. The 6239 Paul Newman is where the idea of a collectible vintage Rolex started. It is the watch, with Replica Rolex Watches  beautiful three-color white dial, that Paul Newman himself actually wore. I think we often forget that. Sure, the screw-down guys go for way more money, and a lot of people prefer the black bezels of the 6241, but there is something so perfect and pure about the 6239 Paul Newman. Matt bought his in the 1990s before the craze became the outright hysteria of today.

Rolex “Double Red, Patent Pending” Sea-Dweller With Tropical Dial

This is another long-time mega watch from Matt’s collection. Many know that a Double-Red Sea-Dweller is an early, collectible version of the first Rolex with a helium escape valve. Rolex Watches Replica  did you know that the very earliest of the batch actually have a case back that reads “(Patent Pending)”? Yup, this watch was made before the patent was granted to Rolex, and on top of that, Matt’s has a gorgeous dark brown dial. You won’t see a patent-pending, tropical, Double-Red Sea-Dweller very often.

Rolex “MilSub” Submariner Reference 5517

Matt has a penchant for watches that serve a purpose, and there isn’t a better example of this than his Rolex Military Submariner issued to the British Armed Forces in the 1970s. His is the desirable reference 5517, which came from a batch very close to John Mayer’s MilSub. The MilSub is the ultimate casual mega watch, and it’s always great to meet collectors who see the value in the great history represented in a six-figure Submariner that is technically exactly the same as any other no-date Sub.

Patek Philippe 2526 White Gold

When one thinks of important time-only watches, the Patek Philippe Calatrava tends to dominate the conversation. While the 570 certainly attracts most of the attention, the importance and collectabiliy of a great 2526 can’t be underestimated. After all, the 2526 was Patek Philippe’s FIRST self-winding watch, period. On top of that, it featured a stunning baked enamel dial and a gorgeous galet-style case that was a bit softer than many of the other Calatravas. The 2526 is a very important watch and while the vast majority of them are cased in yellow gold, you occasionally see them in rose gold. Matt Jacobson’s 2526 is white gold. The odds are you seeing a white-metal 2526 any place outside of the Patek Philippe Museum? Not great.

Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar 3448

Thinking about Matt and his daily routine, which includes cycling, surfing, taking pictures, working on old cars – oh yeah – and being a senior executive at one of the most powerful companies in the world, the 3448 just makes sense. This reference is Patek’s first self-winding perpetual calendar, and it is the only complicated watch he has. There is something very casual about the 3448, and pair with a natural Hermes strap, it really can go from t-shirt in Manhattan Beach to power suit in Midtown Manhattan.

Patek Philippe Nautilus Reference 3700

The popularity and value of the original Nautilus (reference 3700) seems to ebb and flow a ton. This is a watch that collectors love – Jean-Claude Biver has one, and Alfredo Paramico did too (until he consigned it to the #patek175 sale and it brought down crazy money), though for the longest time, prices were hovering below those of the early Royal Oaks. That has changed, and now they are again commanding prices above what we see with the AP 5402, and I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that people like Matt Jacobson wear them.

Patek Philippe Reference 3587 Beta 21

These two watches are special. These are two Beta 21-powered Pateks – or in other words, they are quartz. But these aren’t your average quartz watches. The Beta 21, which was used by the likes of Piaget, IWC, and Rolex, as well, is such a high energy movement that the seconds hands don’t tick like you see on a normal quartz watch. On top of that, these are Pateks, and they are absolutely beautifully made with integrated gold bracelets. Jacobson had a custom strap fitted to the yellow-gold piece and they both look fantastic in their over-sized, TV-shaped cases.

Cartier Crash

As you can tell, Matt’s tastes are for the classics with a bit of funk thrown in from time to time. So, it should come as no surprise that when he was looking to buy a watch for his wife, he settled on the Cartier Crash.
